matthew griffin at uplands
andrew best: to get us started...matthew griffin is an excellent multimedia artist working in melbourne. he recently showed at gertrude contemporary art spaces, which you should all check out next time you're in melbourne. i found the best information about him in un magazine, issue 3, pages 20 - 21 (i'm not sure if we'll add un magazine to our list of mags though - they closed down this year).the image i've found is from a show at uplands gallery, a private gallery attached to TCB (artist run space), in melbourne's chinatown. i like matt's work because it contains elements of sculpture, photography, video, painting and performance, and yet comes out as something completely different to the usual uses of those media. the text he cuts out himself from paper, this says "chasing" and "things fall apart" in a dripping, monster text. his work is usually funny, a bit tortured and lost, but quite sweet at the core of it, and suprising political as well. perhaps it's interested in politics as culture - culture seems to be the link between things. keep an eye out for his wall paintings from cut out vinyl. his videos are excellent, too.
